Root Caries
Root surfaces are prone to root caries due to gingival recession that is accompanied by ageing, previous periodontal infections or toothbrushing-related trauma accumulated over the years.
Nearly one in fifteen and one in eleven Australian and New Zealand adults, respectively, present with root caries while older adults aged 75+ years in both countries have the highest prevalence of root caries.
The practitioner information sheet on this special topic discusses, diagnosis of root caries, risk indicators for root caries as well as prevention and treatment of root caries. The relevant information for patients including what root caries is, how it is diagnosed and what can be done to control and prevent it, is provided in the patient pamphlet.
