Periodontal Disease and Obesity

Nearly 23% of Australians suffer from moderate or severe periodontal disease while almost two thirds of them aged 18 or over are overweight or obese.

Both periodontal disease and obesity are chronic conditions, which share common risk factors. This special topic describes the groups of periodontal diseases and discusses the mechanisms that link up obesity with periodontal disease. New epidemiological evidence on the relationship between obesity and periodontal disease has also been highlighted in the pamphlets.
