Nutrition and Oral Health
Poor diet and nutritional deficiencies have long been implicated in increasing the risk of contracting both systemic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancers as well as major oral diseases including dental caries, periodontal disease and oral cancer.
Nutrition has also been associated with various other oral diseases/conditions.
The material in the professional pamphlet presents information on the impact of nutrition on dental caries, periodontal disease, oral cancer and other oral health outcomes such as oral mucosal diseases/conditions, and how to prevent/control these diseases. Additionally, it provides the current guidelines for sugar consumption in Australia and New Zealand. The patient pamphlet provides relevant information for patients on the effect of diet on oral health, in terms of dental decay, dental erosion, gum disease, oral cancer and oral mucosal diseases/conditions. It also discusses the role of micro- and macro- nutrients as well as the different types of sugar in food.
