Third molar extractions under general anaesthesia are common in Australia and nearly 85% of these are prophylactic. While there is a general consensus among dental practitioners about the need for extracting impacted third molars that are associated with pathology or recurrent symptoms, a debate regarding the need for prophylactically removing asymptomatic disease-free impacted third molars still continues.
