Indigenous Oral Health
This information sheet focuses on the oral health status, in particular dental caries and periodontal disease experience, of Indigenous Australians and New Zealanders while suggesting a few recommendations to improve their oral health.
Indigenous Australians comprise nearly 3% of the Australian population while Indigenous New Zealanders represent almost 15% of the New Zealand population. Information on oral health of representative samples of Indigenous Australian and New Zealander populations, both at national and local/regional levels, is sparse. Nonetheless, the available evidence shows that oral health of Indigenous children and adults is overall poorer on all oral health indicators than their non-Indigenous counterparts.
