Breastfeeding and Oral Health
Almost all children in Australia and New Zealand start breastfeeding, however, only about one in six of them are exclusively breastfed until 6 months of age.
This special topic describes the findings of a “series of breastfeeding” launched by the prominent journal, the Lancet, in early 2016, which discussed the impact of breastfeeding on two oral health outcomes, for the first time. New epidemiological evidence on how breast milk may play a protective role against the development of malocclusions and dental caries has also been highlighted in the information sheets.
