Caries Risk Management Protocols

While certain groups of people are at a higher risk of developing dental caries than others the conventional approach of managing dental caries has led to the vicious cycle of re-removal of carious tissue/failed restorations, progressive loss of sound tooth tissue, weakening of tooth structure and eventual loss of teeth.

In this context, using preventively oriented evidence based caries risk management protocols in the overall prevention and control of dental caries has become particularly important. This information sheet for dental practitioners is based on a scoping review. It identifies and maps the caries risk management protocols which have been used in Australia and New Zealand and reported in the existing literature.
