Lisa Butler and the Prostate Cancer Research Group profiled for Howard Florey 120th Anniversary
Howard Florey is a University of Adelaide Alumnus and is famous for his Nobel Prize-winning discovery of penicillin in the 1930s.
This year, for the 120th anniversary of his birth, the University of Adelaide has profiled some of its leading medical researchers who are inspired by the Florey legacy.
Prof Lisa Butler’s story focusses on her approach to use lipids to better predict how a man’s prostate cancer will behave in the future. This work aims to develop a test which can distinguish whether a cancer is aggressive and requires treatment or whether it is slow-growing and just requires monitoring, so men can have more appropriate treatment interventions when first diagnosed.
As part of the Florey 120th anniversary celebrations, we also had the pleasure of listening to Prof Chris Sweeney, medical oncologist from Harvard Medical School present the Annual Florey Lecture on Advances in Prostate Cancer Management. Prof Sweeney is a collaborator of the Prostate Cancer Research Group, and sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of our Movember/PCFA-funded research program.
Mr Shadrack Mutuku presented part of his PhD work on mass spectrometry lipid imaging in prostate cancers at the Florey Postgraduate Research Conference and some members of the group attended the Florey Gala Dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
