Services include tissue preparation, embedding, sectioning, slide mounting, routine and special staining. Electron microscopy preparation services are also available upon request.

We provide quotes for projects, when grant applications are being prepared. We also have experts in different fields that can provide specialised, individual advice on project planning and development. Their services can also include analysis and reporting of results.

Our services are ideally suited for research staff and postgraduate research students – we offer rapid turnaround times and no job is too big or too small. If you require our services and would like a quotation, please request a quote.

  • Introduction to basic histology skills

Our services also include induction for individual users into the appropriate technical applications and procedures.

Time commitment: One whole day or several shorter sessions.

The staff of the laboratory will explain and demonstrate all procedures involved in producing stained slides of tissue, to staff or students who wish to make personal use of the equipment and facilities available in the discipline.

This includes the demonstration of procedures by qualified, experienced staff, according to safe operating procedures established in the discipline.

Topics covered include the logic and practicalities of fixation, processing, embedding, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, and the skills involved in cutting thin paraffin sections.

Visitors to the laboratory are under close supervision at all times.

Once our staff feel you are competent at each of the procedures, you will receive signed off copies of the relevant safe operating procedures and will be free to make bookings of laboratory equipment during office hours.

    Cost: $200

This includes staff time, consumables and equipment bookings required to process one block and produce two sample slides stained with H&E.

If you require staff provide sample tissue for use during these sessions, please advise us.

  • Equipment access

Access to our histological equipment is available to University honours and postgraduate students and staff at moderate rates. Users must undergo an induction according to our safe operating procedures.

    Equipment available includes:

    • Paraffin wax processor
    • Paraffin wax embedder
    • Rotary Microtome
    • Sledge Microtome
