Adelaide Health Simulation

Adelaide Health Simulation (AHS) is the most technologically advanced simulation facility in Australasia, and the only Australian simulation facility accredited with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare for excellence in learning and teaching.

Our world-class education, training and assessment centre is located in the University of Adelaide’s stunning Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building in the heart of the BioMed City precinct, alongside the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and the University’s medical and nursing school. It is seamlessly linked to an additional facility in the city's East End with a combined capacity of 36 simulation rooms.

We are incredibly proud to be delivering world-class inter-professional learning opportunities to our future health professionals. Adelaide Health Simulation contributes to high quality, safe patient healthcare and we achieve this by providing excellence in both simulation and clinical skills teaching.Associate Professor Adam Montagu, Director Adelaide Health Simulation.

Practical training for medical, nursing and health sciences students

Adelaide Health Simulation was designed to accommodate the needs of university undergraduate medical, nursing and other health sciences students for many years to come, facilitating improved patient safety and quality care delivery for our entire community.

Our academic and professional staff work together to provide innovative education that expertly matches well-established learning theory with innovation, passion and, of course, a wide variety of simulation tools to enhance your clinical preparedness.

Inter-professional learning is an AHS cornerstone from year one of the medical and nursing degrees. Our teaching approach focuses on delivering training that is readily translated into the modern work environment, ensuring you will be keenly sought by employers upon graduation.

We are thrilled to partner with GPEx (external link), the South Australian General Practice Regional Training Organisation, and welcome General Practice Registrars to our teaching team, broadening the scope of experience to which our students are exposed.

Student-centred teaching

Our approach to teaching provides you with a safe, comfortable and well-supported learning environment, with mentoring provided by highly respected educators. You will experience a graduated process of simulation-based education, centred on you.

The use of mastery of learning, advanced debriefing techniques, and video-assisted reflection will place your learning needs at the core of our practice. Whatever the future demands of you as a health professional—from palliative care to intensive care, and basic life support to advanced procedural skills—AHS will help you meet the challenge.

Adelaide Health Simulation also offers short courses to enhance your practical knowledge.

A leader in health simulation

AHS is the only facility in Australia to hold accreditation in teaching and education by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (external link); the largest health care simulation accrediting body in the world. AHS is also an accredited simulation facility for the training of fellows of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (external link), and our team is an approved and accredited training provider for ARC (external link) courses, ACCRM (external link), RACGP (external link), AHPRA (external link), and other professional bodies.

Advanced learning using the latest technology

Adelaide Health Simulation has invested significantly in cutting edge technology, ensuring the most flexible and adaptable simulation learning environment. Simulators covering the entire patient lifespan—from neonatal to the elderly—are available for educators and students. Each learning suite is captured by video and audio, allowing reflection on learning.

Our facilities are designed to provide the most advanced assessment approaches for clinical and objective structured clinical exams (OSCEs). We employ video capture, electronic marking and advanced data analytics to ensure assessment is automated, robust, and creates a useful learning process for students.
