A Typical Semester
Students have the opportunity of attending 8 clinical contact sessions each week. There are 3 GPs, 2 credentialled diabetes educators, and 7 specialty trained nurses on site at the Minlaton Medical Centre. Visiting Specialists include Cardiologist, Ophthalmologist, Geriatrician, asthma educator, and audiologist. Community Health services are also available through the health centre.

Minlaton Medical Centre
During this placement the students will be exposed to general practice medicine, rural and remote medicine and management, and emergency medicine via the attached Accident and Emergency department. There is very wide and varied clinical exposure at this practice.

Minlaton is a small rural town on the Yorke Peninsula. The population of the town is approximately 900 people, the surrounding catchment areas increase this number to approximately 2500 people, who utilise the Minlaton Medical Centre and Accident and Emergency, in the town. During the summer months the population triples, as do the presentations to the medical centre.
It is located 198 km west of Adelaide, approximately 2.5 hours’ drive. Minlaton lies in the central south of the Yorke Peninsula; there are several nearby seaside towns on the east and west coast surrounding Minlaton; Stansbury and Port Vincent to the West, and Hardwicke Bay, Port Rickaby, and Bluff Beach to the east. Yorketown is another centrally located town 30km south of Minlaton. This is the only hospital for the Southern Yorke Peninsula. Minlaton is predominantly a farming community, providing grazing and cropping.

There are over 400km of coastline for fishing, swimming, snorkelling, diving, boating, cycling, walking and hiking. There are numerous art and craft galleries all over the Yorke Peninsula, often with cafés on site.

Minlaton is made up of a grid system very similar to the city of Adelaide, with one main central street with all others feeding off this.
There is a local bakery, 3 cafés, and 1 hotel for eating out options. The football club also does meals.
Retail facilities include a supermarket, hardware, newsagent, clothing boutique, agricultural suppliers, post office, electrical shops, and other retail outlets. There are branches of both ANZ and Bank SA in the town.
Harvest Corner is a local visitor’s information centre, which has won numerous tourism awards. It has local art, craft and produce for sale, as well as lots of tourist information, brochures, booklets and pamphlets on what activities there are to do around the area. They also sell souvenirs of the area. It has an internet café and also sells coffee, and locally baked cakes and biscuits.
The YP Council has an office in Minlaton and is also a good resource for a comprehensive list of services available in the town. The town offers services in building, construction and maintenance, health, education, childcare and aged care.

Minlaton Accommodation
The student accommodation is a brick veneer home, with an attached games room. It has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 main living areas, large communal dining area, and large fully equipped kitchen. There is also a study and a laundry. The house is fully furnished; all that is required is your linen, personal toiletries, and your food. TV, DVD player, desktop computer with wifi are all supplied.

There is a large sporting community, including football, netball, hockey, softball, cricket, basketball, table tennis and golf. There are also many recreational activities such as boating, camping, fishing, walking etc.
