Mount Barker Site Information
The Mount Barker program is an integrated program, where all aspects of the program will be covered weekly rather than in block rotations. You will be ‘based’ at a GP Super Clinic (Summit Health Centre) but will be doing more than GP work each week. Students will also work at the Mt Barker Hospital.
Students will participate in the 36 week integrated program consisting of Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Geriatrics, Anaesthesia and General Practice. There will be a GP academic on site to supervise and mentor students.
Within the learning centre, students will have access to a dedicated study area with IT facilities, including internet access. Video conferencing facilities are also available for students to participate in weekly tutorials and to enable students to maintain contact with Adelaide based staff and students, as well as other students on placement with the ARCS.
Mount Barker is a quick 20 minutes drive from Adelaide. The original inhabitants of the region are the Mount Barker Peramangk Aboriginal people. Mount Barker was later named after the explorer, Captain Collett Barker.
Mount Barker is graced by the Mount Barker Summit, a well known landmark of the region and an important site for our aboriginal people. It is well worth a visit. To get to the summit go via Springs Road and Summit Road.
Laratinga Wetlands
These wetlands have been landscaped using indigenous plant species which have become home to many species of birds, approximately 140 species, and importantly have encouraged some species back to the area, such as the Yellow Tail Black Cockatoo. Many bird species now breed in the region. The success of these artificial wetlands is unique to South Australia. Laraitinga is a Peramangk name for the Mount Barker creek. The Laratinga wetlands consists of three excellent walking trails (Chestnut Teal Trail, Rosella Trail and Sacred Ibis Trail) which are well worth a visit.
