A Typical Semester

The program in Port Augusta is a block rotation of 8/9 weeks.

Port Augusta Hospital

Students cycle through rotations in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and three GP Clinics, The Old Base Clinic and The Ghan Medical Centre (includes one morning at Kanyaka Clinic in Quorn SA).

You may also get the opportunity to undertake a day with the Royal Flying Doctor Service during your stay.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service has a base in Port Augusta.

Port Augusta Video Conference Room

In Port Augusta we have various specialists who visit on a regular basis. Specialists include:  Orthopaedic Surgeon, Cardiologist, Ophthalmologist, Thoracic Specialist, Nephrologist, Respiratory Physician, Plastic Surgeon, ENT Surgeon.

The Rural Clinical School provides 9 week surgical attachments in Port Augusta for Year 4 MBBS students.During your placement you will be under the guidance of experienced rural surgeons, practitioners and visiting surgeons from the Queen Elizabeth and Royal Adelaide hospitals.

Port Augusta is equipped with student facilities, including student accommodation, study areas, libraries and up to date IT equipment, including video conferencing facilities.

When allocated to the Year 4 Surgical Home Unit, students are provided with free accommodation, IT & internet access at accommodation, and 1 return trip to Adelaide in addition to your travel to and from your placement.For more details about this program please go to Surgical Home Unit Program.

Port Augusta is situated near the head of the Spencer Gulf in South Australia. The town is in close proximity to the spectacular Flinders Ranges and is situated on the road and rail crossroads in South Australia. The city has a population of approx 14,000 residents and offers a range of services to the community and visitors to the region.

The unique location of Port Augusta offers access to the waters of Spencer Gulf for kayaking, fishing and other water sports and access to the magnificent Flinders Ranges.

Port Augusta boasts award winning tourism sites and services, including the Wadlata Outback Centre which provides tourism information and offers the unique “Tunnel of Time” experience, introducing visitors and residents to the history of the region and the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, established in 1993 to research, conserve and promote the appreciation of Australia’s arid zone flora. For those interested in the arts, the Yarta Purtli Cultural Centre, houses gallery spaces and performance areas and also hosts the Annual Desert Fringe Festival in March.

The University of Adelaide, Port Augusta Centre

Discipline of Rural Health at Port Augusta

The University of Adelaide Port Augusta Centre, located in the city centre was once the first primary school in the city. Built in the 1800’s, this State Heritage listed building has been refurbished and provides students with access to a student lounge, video conference facilities and support staff. Other University of Adelaide staff and programs are also located at the centre.

Student Housing

Port Augusta student accommodation is located in 3 separate blocks of units in the town. They are two bedroom units and are generally shared accommodation.

There are 14, 2 bedroom units and a common room. The units have wireless internet access.

Unit Configuration – each unit has the following:

  • Shared lounge, bathroom and toilet
  • Bedroom A has a double bed with a lockable door and internet port
  • Bedroom B has a single bed with a lockable door and internet port
  • The Units are fully furnished and include a fridge, washing machine, microwave & iron with fully functional kitchen
  • Linen provided includes: mattress protectors, pillows & pillow protectors, quilts & quilt covers, blankets and tea towels
  • Car parking is available at front of the unit and at the end of the complex.

Activities & Sport

Opening in 2015 the Central Oval Community Sporting Hub will house 3 basketball courts, meeting rooms, change rooms, and function spaces. It will provide one large community area for people to gather to play and watch a range of sports in a central precinct.

There are many opportunities to engage in sporting activities in the city. Football, netball, cricket, tennis, softball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, golf, kayaking, yachting and much, much, more; there is something for everyone.
