Research

The CRE Frailty and Healthy Ageing has many programs of research across a number of disciplines.

This project is now concluded

This project is now concluded (2016-Nov 2022) and these pages are no longer updated. They remain for historical context relating to the project.

Frailty burden

As a result of this research policy makers as well as clinicians will have available to them information about the health burden related to frailty.

Sarcopenia burden

As a result of this research policy makers as well as clinicians will have available to them information about the health burden related to sarcopenia.

Medication & frailty

Medications may be a modifiable risk factor for frailty and this research will help us better understand this risk.

Geography of frailty

Developing a better understanding of how the frailty burden is distributed and how it is changing, can can guide resource allocation decisions to better match resources, such as health services, with the populations that need them.

Geography of frailty

Health economics of frailty

To improve access to cost-effective and quality health and aged care service, this research will help deliver on a 'novel' open access health economics model ensuring that funding decisions no longer disadvantage the frail.

Screening for frailty

This research aims to not only deliver on a translatable general practice based screening pathway but also develop a screening strategy for residential aged care.

Interventions to treat & prevent frailty

Through our research, we will develop and test novel interventions to prevent and improve frailty.

Knowledge translation to practice & policy

Our investigators are world leaders in knowledge translation and their research will help us ensure that the efforts of our centre will be meaningful to the end users including consumers, service providers, clinicians and policy makers.

Fracture & frailty

Fragility fractures commonly impact frail older people. It is not uncommon to notice the fracture cascade impacting some beginning with minor fractures (e.g. wrist) and culminating in a hip fracture. We will undertake research to identify new service models to improve post-operative fracture care.

Mobility

Poor mobility is seen with increasing frailty and threatens independence. We will undertake research to improve mobility.

Frailty management in the emergency department (ED)

Increasing numbers of frail older people are presenting to our EDs. Improving the management of frail older people in our EDs will result in better outcome for both discharged and admitted patients.
