Mr Unyime Jasper receiving the Office for Ageing Well Tackling Ageism Award.

Congratulations to PhD student Mr Unyime Jasper who received the Office for Ageing Well Tackling Ageism Award. The winners of the prestigious 2021 South Australian Community Achievement Awards were announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner at the Hilton Adelaide on Saturday evening 20 November 2021.

Jasper was nominated for the award by an anonymous community member for his research work that aims to reduce prolonged periods of sitting and lying (sedentary behaviour) and promote physical activity among hospitalised older people. Jasper regularly shares the findings from his research to educate clinicians, community-dwelling older people and their carers on the importance of reducing sedentary behaviour and increasing physical activity for older people during hospitalisation.

Jasper said “I am grateful to the anonymous person who nominated me. I would like to thank the Office of Ageing Well, my PhD supervisors and award sponsors for this award.”

Jasper continues “The award has shown me that the little things I am doing to empower older people, their carers and clinicians is appreciated by the community and has stimulated my desire to contribute more towards the healthy ageing agenda. At the community level, I hope it will open doors for more collaborations to disseminate the message of healthy ageing through reducing sedentary behaviour and encouraging participation in physical activity.”

Congratulations to Jasper and all the 2021 South Australian Community Achievement Awards recipients.
