Our history
Prior to 2013, the academic efforts (teaching and research) of geriatric medicine were within the hospital setting. Given population ageing and the need for a greater understanding of community and long-term care, the Adelaide GTRAC Centre was formed to provide our graduating medical students with exposure to health settings outside of acute hospitals.
A spoke academic centre was made possible between 27 February 2013 and the end of October 2025 with establishment funding from Health Workforce Australia and the federal Department of Health and Ageing, partnership from Resthaven Inc. and ongoing funding from the University of Adelaide.
The Adelaide GTRAC Centre remains affiliated with the Aged and Extended Care Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and continues collaboration with the aged care sector, ensuring that our medical (and research) students as well as clinical trainees are well prepared to meet the health needs of older patients across the continuum of care including home, residential aged care and hospital settings.
