Discipline of Rural Health

The Discipline of Rural Health is a regional multi-disciplinary school of health science funded by the Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing through the Rural Clinical Training and Support (RCTS) program to enable medical students to learn in rural sites. Rural Clinical Placements are coordinated through the Discipine of Rural Health.

An integral part of the MBBS program is exposure for all students to teaching and medical practice in a rural setting. Students in Years 4-6 are required to undertake clinical placements within teaching hospitals and the broader medical community. Due to both Australian Government's funding requirements and limitations on the number of urban clinical placements available, some MBBS students will be required to undertake placements in rural settings.

The Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing requirements are as follows:

  • All MBBS students on a Commonwealth Supported Place must undertake a minimum of 4 weeks of clinical learning in a rural location during their MBBS Program
  • The number of Australian medical students undertaking a minimum of one year of their clinical training in a rural area must be equal to 25% of the total number of MBBS students on Commonwealth Supported Places.
