Web Map Launch: Frailty Prevalence in Australia 2011, 2016 and 2027

A freely accessibly population mapping resource to inform service planning.

It is estimated that in 2016 approximately 415,769 people living in Australia aged 65 years or more were frail and almost 1.7 million people were pre-frail. In future years, as the population ages, these figures will increase rapidly, reaching 609,306 frail and 2,248,977 pre-frail by 2027, if prevalence continues at current levels.

Frailty is a preventable and treatable condition that reduces the quality of life for many older people. It is associated with poor health outcomes and increased health care usage and costs. Understanding the distribution and growth of frailty is important for planning and budgeting service provision and health interventions aimed to support the needs of Australia’s growing ageing population.

The newly developed interactive web mapping application: Frail and Pre-Frail Estimates for Australia provides insight into the size, distribution and growth of Australia’s frail and pre-frail population. The interactive maps allow users to zoom to an area of interest and see the distribution of frailty or pre-frailty and the associated population estimates.
