Paediatrics

The Discipline of Paediatrics focuses its teaching and research on infant, child and adolescent health.

Paediatrics encompasses all aspects of children’s health and wellbeing—physical and mental health, acute and chronic conditions, and child and adolescent behaviour and development. The field is practised as a wide range of subspecialties serving children up to 18 years, including general and speciality paediatric medicine, general and speciality surgery, psychological medicine and psychiatry.

Paediatrics

Located at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, South Australia’s tertiary children’s teaching hospital, the Discipline of Paediatrics conducts subspecialty attachments for students in:

  • general medicine

  • diabetes and endocrinology
  • respiratory medicine
  • renal medicine
  • genetics
  • cardiology
  • neonatology
  • neurology
  • gastroenterology

Extensive undergraduate teaching

The discipline teaches in the Adelaide Medical School’s Bachelor of Health and Medical SciencesBachelor of Health and Medical Sciences (Advanced), and the Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine offering students a progressive academic environment, with world-leading teachers and researchers.

Additionally, honours students are offered the opportunity to undertake a full-year research project (or part-time equivalent) within the discipline. This program aims to:

  • provide mentored training and education in scientific research methods
  • develop critical thinking and learning skills
  • develop logical reasoning, written and oral communication skills
  • encourage interest in a broad range of child-and-adolescent-health-related areas.

Wide-ranging research and postgraduate education

Research within the Discipline of Paediatrics is aligned to two core Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences research areas: early origins of health and child and adolescent health

Discipline researchers work in part within the Robinson Research Institute, and have particular strengths in the areas of: neurogenetics and neurodevelopment; prevention and treatment of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes; immunisation trials and vaccine uptake and surveillance; allergy; sleep and respiratory medicine; immunopathology and molecular immunology.

The discipline also offers places for students to undertake their PhD in a wide range of paediatric research areas, both clinical and laboratory-based.

Collaboration with the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

We work closely with the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which specialises in education and research in the wellbeing of women, their babies, the reproductive health of men, and the health of future generations.
