Professor Wayne Tilley, Lab Director

Professor Wayne Tilley

Professor Tilley is the inaugural Director of the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories (2002- current) at the University of Adelaide. His research program is broadly focused on hormonal carcinogenesis, with an emphasis on mechanisms of sex hormone signalling and the emergence of resistance to endocrine therapies used in the treatment of breast and prostate cancer. His laboratory has highlighted the critical role of the androgen receptor (AR) in driving prostate cancer, including evidence for oncogenic potential of the AR and, conversely, understanding how the AR can counteract the proliferative effects of estrogens in breast cancer. A major objective of his current research is the development of novel treatments for castration resistant prostate cancer and specific subtypes of AR-positive breast cancer. He has published over 197 peer-reviewed papers, including 4 high impact papers on sex hormone receptor action in breast and prostate cancer in Nature, Nature Genetics, Journal of the National Cancer Institute and Nature Reviews Cancer in the past 2 years. Professor Tilley established the Flinders Cancer Centre in Adelaide, Australia in the early 1990’s after completing a NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas where he was one of the first to clone the human androgen receptor. Since that time he has developed an internationally recognized research program on sex steroid hormone action in breast and prostate cancer. A recent visiting scientist position (2012-2014) at Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Cambridge Institute, University of Cambridge with Associate Professor Jason Carroll facilitated the development of invaluable new molecular and proteomic technologies to better interrogate steroid receptor action in breast and prostate cancer. He convenes the International Breast and Prostate Cancer PacRim meeting series, and received the University of Adelaide’s 2015 Executive Dean’s Award for Research Excellence. Professor Tilley was awarded the Endocrine Society of Australia 2016 Senior Plenary Award and gave the introductory Plenary Lecture at the International Congress of Endocrinology in Beijing, China, highlighting the recognition of his research excellence in the field of Endocrinology, in particular hormone-dependent (breast and prostate) cancers.
