About the Lab

The research program in the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories strives to improve disease outcomes for men with prostate cancer and women with breast cancer by deeply understanding how sex hormones (such as testosterone, estrogen and progesterone) control tumour behaviour. This information is used to develop new drugs or treatment strategies that therapeutically manipulate sex hormone action.

Professor Wayne Tilley is inaugural Director of the DRMCRL. The DRMCRL were established in 2002 by Professors Wayne Tilley and Villis Marshall as a joint initiative of the University of Adelaide, the Royal Adelaide Hospital, IMVS and the Cancer Council of South Australia. The development of this world-class cancer research centre brought together expertise spanning 20 years in basic and translational prostate and breast cancer research. In 2011 Professor Tilley was awarded the inaugural Dame Roma Mitchell Chair in Cancer Research. The Chair was named in recognition of the significant contribution Dame Roma Mitchell made to the University.

The DRMCRL comprises the Prostate and Breast Cancer Research Groups, and employs more than 20 researchers. It is the leading research centre in Australia dedicated to breast and prostate cancer research that spans discovery to clinical translation. The group actively collaborates with local, national and international research groups and clinicians, which ensures the research at the DRMCRL is competitive on the world stage.

The DRMCRL’s research strives to improve disease outcomes for men with prostate cancer and women with breast cancer by deeply understanding how sex hormones (such as testosterone, estrogen and progesterone) control tumour behaviour. This information is used to develop new drugs or treatment strategies that therapeutically manipulate sex hormone action.

The DRMCRL's research is further enhanced by a committed consumer advisory panel, dedicated to ensuring that our research remains focussed and at the forefront of this important area of study effecting all levels of society. The Lab has a strong relationship with a large number of national and international collaborators, ensuring that our research remains on the cutting edge of international research trends.
