| Current research interests relate to the development of
techniques for liver tumour destruction. We are particularly
interested in developing minimally invasive techniques capable of destroying
both primary and secondary liver tumours by inserting electrodes into the
tumours. Early human studies have indicated successful ablation of such tumours
and a study looking at inoperable colorectal secondary metastatic disease
treated by this technique is about to commence using new hybrid technology.
The evidence behind new surgical technologies is assessed using formal systematic reviews, accelerated reviews and horizon scanning. This has led to in excess of 40 peer reviewed papers on surgical evidence.
The Department is also interested in assessing new forms of surgical
care delivery by the use of more ambulant and outpatient techniques. In
particular, day surgery, hospital in the home, patient hotels and 23-hour
ward facilities are areas currently undergoing evaluation and assessment.
