RESEARCH
The principal area of research currently involves Sentinel Node Biopsy (SNB) in breast cancer, and melanoma. The Breast and Surgical Oncology Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital has developed the technique within Australasia, and has published data on outcomes, as well as on methodology, surgical technique and specific variables which influence success of the technique. We have recently introduced intensive courses in the science and practice of SNB for Australian surgeons.

The trial comparing Sentinel Node Biopsy with Azillary Clearance in women with operable breast cancer is well established. As at July 14th, 2002, 664 women had been randomised and 23 centres are participating in Australia and New Zealand. The Group has received funding from the NH&MRC for 5 years, and we anticipate the completion of accrual in mid-2004.

We are working closely with Dr G Farshid in Tissue Pathology, on an optimal method of evaluating the SN status, and with Dr Rudzki?s team in Molecular Genetics, on comparison of and validation of, the assessment of the status of the HER-2 oncogene by PCR techniques and immunohistochemical assessment of antibody expression. (Dr Anoo Raman, Dr G Farshid).

I have contributed to the Australian study of the oncolysate vaccine in high risk melanoma patients, and currently participate in new studies involving the use of the C-vax vaccine from UCLA. Previous work in the department has demonstrated strong associations between melanoma and other tumours, and these will be revisited and expanded.

The Breast Unit is actively involved in studies of endocrine therapy in early breast cancer, as well as supporting the ANZ Breast Cancer Trial Group studies in adjuvant chemotherapy.
