Structured program for the degrees of Masters (Research) and Doctor of PhilosophyIntroduction All candidates commencing a Doctorate or a Masters by research program are required to participate in the Structured Program. The Structured Program consists of two components: Core Component involving all commencing students and Specialist Component, devised in consultation with the supervisor, and tailored to the needs of the individual student. Core Obligations (to be completed within the first 6 months) Attend the Induction session for Higher Degree by Research Students run by the Adelaide Graduate Centre Be familiar with the Research Student Handbook produced by the Graduate Studies Branch. http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/handbook/ Be familiar with Guidelines and Rules for Responsible Practice in Research http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/forms/responsible_research_guide.pdf Refer to the document Academic Program Rules & Specifications for Thesis Obtain and read the "Guidelines for Core Component and Structured Program for Higher Degree Candidature, School of Medicine, University of Adelaide" Students at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital should consult with Dr Prue Cowled, (Principal Medical Scientist/Affiliate Senior Lecturer/Postgraduate Coordinator, Second Floor, Basil Hetzel Institute, Queen Elizabeth Hospital; E-mail address: prue.cowled@adelaide.edu.au and those at the Royal Adelaide Hospital should consult with Neville De Young (Department Manager/Postgraduate Coordinator, Room EH5-35, Eleanor Harrald Building, Royal Adelaide Hospital E-mail address: neville.deyoung@adelaide.edu.au regarding regulations governing the use of all departmental resources (eg photocopying, placing orders and electronic communications), the role of the postgraduate coordinator and Occupational Health and Safety regulations, policies and procedures Ensure the necessary University approvals are in place for your studies - human, animal, recombinant DNA or use of teratogens clearances from the relevant Institutional Panels Within the first three months of enrolment, prepare a Research Proposal in conjunction with your Principal Supervisor as per the format described in "Guidelines for Core Component and Structured Program for Higher Degree Candidature, School of Medicine, University of Adelaide". The Research Proposal should be sent to the Post-Graduate Coordinator within three months of enrolment. This will be reviewed and submitted to the Adelaide Graduate Centre together with the completed Core Component of the Structured Program form Present a seminar on their research proposal within the first six months. Specialist Component This is to be organised in consultation with the supervisor. Attend the postgraduate student workshops on writing a literature review, a research proposal, a thesis and a paper for publication (Research Education Program held by Adelaide Graduate Centre) as directed by supervisor and/or Postgraduate Coordinator. In projects involving the direct or indirect use of live animals, attend a training session on the Care and Use of Animals in Research conducted by Animal Services. Annual and Major Review Newly enrolled students must undergo a Major Review of Progress at the end of their first 12 months of candidature. All students are required to submit an Annual Review of Progress by 31 st October each year to the Adelaide Graduate Centre, even if they have intermitted or suspended their candidature. Commencing Overseas Students All overseas students must participate in the International Bridging Program in consultation with the International Student Office, supervisor(s) and Postgraduate Coordinator unless they receive exemption. Ongoing Commitments for all Postgraduate Students Attendance at departmental and special seminars. Annual seminar on progress to be given prior to submission of Annual Review of Progress report, and a final seminar to be presented no less than two months prior to the estimated date of submission. Any change in status (eg full time to part-time or visa versa; leave of absence) to be discussed with the supervisor and Postgraduate Coordinator.
