Honours in the Discipline of Surgery

  1. Thesis proposal - 500 words due within 2-3 weeks of commencement  (does not contribute to the overall assessment mark).
  2. Essay - 5000 words on an unrelated topic (15% of marks).
  3. Research proposal on an unrelated topic (15% of marks).
  4. Seminars - March for thesis proposal (10 min - not assessed), two 10 min progress seminars (June and September - not assessed). Final seminar (45 min in November, 15% of marks).
  5. Thesis - 50 pages not including figures, figure legends, references and appendices, due in November (55% of marks).
  6. Viva - thesis defence. Forty mins immediately after or within a few days of the final seminar.
  7. Other - students are expected to attend research meetings held every fortnight in the department of surgery.

There are many opportunities to do an Honours degree (B. Med Sci - Hons; B Health Sci -Hons) in the Discipline of Surgery at either the Royal Adelaide Hospital or The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Please refer to the Research Interests section of individual Academic Staff members in this website for potential areas of interest for Honours projects.
