About the Study

Title: Prospective evaluation of a model to predict outcomes following Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)

We are seeking to enrol 1000 patients who require endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for non-ruptured aneurysms. These patients will take part in a study which will run for approximately five years. Patients will be asked by their surgeon if they are willing to have information about to their condition, operation, post-operative recovery and longer term recovery sent to the study centre at Adelaide University for analysis. Some patients may also be asked to provide blood samples to help with the study.  These will be analysed at a laboratory in Townsville. All patient information will be de-identified once it is received in Adelaide. Further information is provided in the patient information sheet (available online soon).

Surgeons from around Australia and from one unit in the UK are assisting with the study. Participating surgeons will be asked to enrol their public and private practice patients into the study.

The objectives of this study are:

  1. To assess and improve a model that was developed to enable surgeons to predict how successful the EVAR procedure is likely to be for individual patients, before the procedure is done.
  2. To assess whether certain biomarkers (substances found in the blood) are able to predict the incidence of poor outcomes after EVAR and hence contribute to the predictive model.

To be eligible to participate in this study, patients must meet the following inclusion/exclusion criteria:

Inclusion criteria:

  1. Patients undergoing elective EVAR repair
  2. Individuals ≥ 50 years of age
  3. All proprietary brands of endovascular devices, as well as cases in which fenestrated or branch grafting is performed.

Exclusion criteria:

  1. Ruptured aneurysms
  2. Patients who are mentally or intellectually impaired and cannot make an informed decision
