Indigenous Students

Indigenous Student Access to Medicine and Dentistry

Please also refer to Wilto Yerlo

Places are held for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students entering Medicine and Dentistry.
In addition to undertaking UMAT and the Medicine and Dentistry Oral Assessment, applicants can apply via the Aboriginal Access Scheme and undertake the Wilto Yerlo (the University's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs Unit) selection process involving testing and an interview. After the interview  there is an important discussion where the outcomes of the Medical School, Dental School and Wilto Yerlo assessments are considered.

Through this process candidates are:

  • admitted to Medicine or Dentistry,
  • admitted to Health Sciences,
  • admitted to a Wilto Yerlo foundation studies program, or
  • counselled to consider other course pathways.

The Health Sciences program has been used as a pathway to Medicine and Dentistry, where applicants may to have the academic ability to undertake a Medicine and Dentistry course but they have only demonstrated a weak motivation for Medicine/Dentistry and/or a limited knowledge about Medicine or Dentistry  as a career.
The Medical School currently has 9 Aboriginal students and the Dentistry program has 3 Indigenous students
