Honours Program
School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health Honours Program
Students nearing the completion of their undergraduate degree or medical students who have completed three or more years of the MBBS may choose to do their Honours program through the School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health. Students with Science or Health Science backgrounds may undertake a course of one year full-time study (or part time equivalent) leading to the degree of B Health Sc (Hons). Students undertaking the MBBS degree have the opportunity to undertake the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Medical Sciences (HB.MedSc) program after their 3rd year or later. MBBS students must seek approval to undertake Honours (see HB.MedSc Guidelines and Policy). Mid-year entry into the program is also available to students enrolled in either full time or part time study, but not all projects may be available for mid-year commencement.
Students are able to undertake the honours course in either the Discipline of Paediatrics or the Discipline of Obstetrics & Gynaecology as part of the School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health Honours Program (see these links for further information about the Disciplines).
Information for prospective Honours students
The School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health invites you to consider joining us for Honours. Our two Disciplines, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics are internationally recognised as research leaders in reproductive biology and medicine, maternal, fetal and child health, and reproductive and regenerative medicine. Our research starts at the genome and epigenome and carries right through to clinical practice and evaluation!
Our Honours students are a valued part of our research teams, and an Honours degree opens up options for postgraduate study later on as well as giving you an in-depth understanding of your research field. Students who have completed three or more years of their MBBS course are eligible to enrol as Honours students in our School.
The first step for those who are considering Honours is to read the Honours project booklet (see below) and identify a project or research area of interest, then contact the supervisor directly. Honours scholarships of up to $7000 pa are available to academically excellent students. The School's Honours program is outlined in the project booklet, and you are welcome to contact the School's Honours Coordinator, Dr Kathy Gatford (contact details below) with any specific queries about the course or your eligibility.
