Welcome to The School of Medicine

The School of Medicine has large responsibility for teaching within the clinical years of the Undergraduate Medical Program within the University of Adelaide, Faculty of Health Sciences.   The School incorporates the Disciplines of Acute Care Medicine, Medicine, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry and Surgery.

Globe and Stethescope

The Program continues to expand with an increasingly strong focus on research.   The ongoing success of the research agenda within all Disciplines is significant and this feeds directly into a high quality teaching programme as the research success helps to reinforce the strong clinical credentials of many of the School’s members.   The School, however, relies very heavily on clinical titleholders who perform a vast amount of the undergraduate teaching.   Much of this is done on an honorary basis or incorporated into hospital commitments, and without the motivation and support of these clinical titleholders our teaching program would be impossible to deliver.   The School therefore represents a group of highly successful researchers, a core of academic teachers and a large pool of enthusiastic and motivated clinical titleholders.

The School now has significant teaching activities at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Modbury Hospital and Lyell McEwin Hospital, as well as significant research activities on the Royal Adelaide Hospital campus, the Medical School and the Basil Hetzel Institute associated with The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The organisation continues to be complex but highly successful.

Professor Guy Maddern, Acting Head of School, School of Medicine
