University Research Institutes and Research CentresThe University, in building and supporting research of the highest quality, encourages the strategic use of Research Institutes and Research Centres to promote existing and emerging areas of research strength, enhance the University's national and international profile, promote strategic linkages with external partners, assist in attracting both outstanding researchers and external research funding, foster renowned research teams, attract higher degree by research students (including international students), and boost high quality research output. University Research InstitutesFollowing are listed University Institutes and University Centres hosted largely in the Faculty of Health Sciences, including Directors/Key contacts:- - The Robinson Institute, combining South Australia's expertise in reproductive health, intergenerational health and stem cells encompasses four existing University Research Centres in a collaborative venture with the Adelaide Hospitals and SA Pathology involving more than 200 research staff and students with expertise ranging from epidemiology through to molecular biology and genetics. (Professor Robert Norman)
The following designated *University Research Centres are incorporated within the Robinson Institute: *Research Centre for Reproductive Health (RCRH) The RCRH seeks to make important scientific discoveries and to translate those into practical health and industry outcomes through clinical and commercial interactions. This is achieved by undertaking first-class, cutting edge fundamental and clinical research, and by fostering collaborations between scientists and clinicians in obstetrics, gynaecology, endocrinology and cancer. (Associate Professor Sarah Robertson & Associate Professor Jeremy Thompson) *The Research Centre for the Early Origins of Health and Disease (EOHaD) is a leader in the investigation of the intergenerational and perinatal origins of metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological and reproductive health in postnatal life. (Professor Julie Owens) *Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR) is a collaborative initiative comprising research groups in the Faculties of Health Sciences and Sciences, the Women's & Children's Hospital, the IMVS, the Hanson Institute and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Its members undertake internationally recognised and awarded research in bone marrow, neural, periodontal, ovarian and cord blood stem cells and their potential applications in stroke repair, cardiac repair, tissue repair (dental, muscle, cartilage), cystic fibrosis, lysosomal storage and other inherited disorders, transplantation medicine, developmental biology, immune diseases and leukaemia. (Associate Professor Mark Nottle) *Australian Research Centre for Health of Women & Babies (ARCH) is an international centre of excellence for maternal and perinatal research benefitting babies and women worldwide. (Professor Caroline Crowther)
- Adelaide Cancer Research Institute will build a comprehensive understanding of cancer systems biology, and develop and apply cancer treatment techniques. (Director: tbc)
Key Research Centres: Centre for Cancer Biology (Prof Angel Lopez, SA Pathology & an affiliate of the University) Centre for Breast & Prostate Cancer with a particular focus on sex hormone receptors (Professor Wayne Tilley).
University Research Centres Following are listed University Research Centres hosted in the Faculty of Health Sciences additional to those listed above, including the Directors/Key contacts:- - The Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health (ARCPOH) Australia's pre-eminent population oral health research body undertaking dental research and providing a broad range of dental and oral health statistics. (Professor John Spencer)
- The Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health was established in 2007 as a joint venture between the University of Adelaide and the Freemasons Foundation with the vision to enable men to live longer, healthier, happier lives. The Centre is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of world renowned experts collaborating across clinical services, research programs and continuing education on various aspects of men's health. (Professor Villis Marshall)
- Centre for Orofacial Research and Learning (CORAL) consists of 5 major Units which all pursue multi-disciplinary approaches. Each Unit has made significant contributions to the field of Oral Health: Periodontal Pathology; Craniofacial Biology; Dental Education; Mucosal Research; and Dental Materials. NHMRC funding has been provided over five years, commencing in 2009, to establish a CCRE for Oral Health, which will focus on the prevention and treatment of oral diseases and disorders and their clinical consequences. Research will emphasise three areas of clinical care that are critical to the management of oral health, systemic health and general wellbeing: i) primary prevention to prevent disease onset; ii) diagnosis and risk prediction for oral conditions; and iii) clinical intervention. (Professor Mark Bartold)
- The Centre for Digestive Health and Nutrition includes the CCRE in Nutritional Physiology, Interventions and Outcomes established in 2007. The Centre seeks to capitalise on the expertise, synergies and multidisciplinary collaborations of several groups, all leaders in their fields, and whose collective track record in clinical nutrition research cannot be matched in Australia, to form a Centre of Excellence that encompasses the physiology of nutrition, dietary intervention strategies, and evaluation of outcomes, with a focus on diabetic, overweight, elderly, and critically unwell populations. (Professor Michael Horowitz)
- The Children's Research Centre is at the forefront of children's health in Adelaide, being uniquely placed to translate applied basic and clinical research findings into health practice and policy to benefit children and adolescents. The six (6) research programs, encompassing and uniting the research of the Discipline of Paediatrics and affiliate collaborators of the University of Adelaide and Children's Youth and Women's Health Service (CYWHS), are: Diabetes, Gut and Obesity; Immunology and Vaccine; Sleep and Respiratory; Population and Mental Health; Bone Growth and Neuromotor Development. (Professor Jennifer Couper)
- Simpson Centre for Military and Post-deployment Health (Professor Sandy McFarlane)
