Monrad (1811-1887).  Manic-Depressive Disorder and Political Leadership.  In the fateful period for Denmark, in 1864, Monrad became Prime Minister.  He led Denmark into the disastrous Danish-German War (Bismarck) in 1864.  Monrad forfeited a peaceful resolution of the Schleswig-Holstein question, one of the most complicated that has occupied European diplomacy.  Denmark lost Schleswig-Holstein and Lauenburg, i.e. two fifths of her territory and one third of her population.
