Assessments of the Determinants and Epidemiology of Psychological Distress (ADEPD) Study

Background | Study Team | Reports | Presentations

Background

Assessment of the Determinants and Epidemiology of Psychological Distress (ADEPD) Study.  The study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the determinants of psychological distress (and psychological wellness) and mental health in the South Australian population by bringing together researchers from a range of disciplines and using representative data from the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System (SAMSS) and other sources.

Addressing psychological distress (PD) and wellness in South Australia is part of Objective 2 Improving wellbeing in the State Strategic Plan, and is monitored using SAMSS.  Effective policy and program interventions to reduce the prevalence and impact of PD in the community can only be developed through a thorough understanding of its determinants.

The ADEPD study brings together many experts from fields related to PD, social determinants of health, epidemiology, statistics, health promotion, policy, and planning in order to analyse and interpret the existing data, and provide recommendations for prevention and early intervention strategies.

Objectives of the ADEPD Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between psychological distress (PD) and a range of individual- and community- level socioeconomic demographic factors and health factors. To examine the relationship between PD and a range of health indicators.
  • To determine how the relationships between PD and social and health determinants differ across gender, age groups and over time.
  • To examine the patterns of PD for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • To study in detail the relationship between PD and self-reported mental health.
  • To develop consensus among relevant experts about the determinants of PD based on evidence produced from this study.
