Description
Asthma is a chronic disease causing episodes of wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath due to widespread narrowing of the airways within the lungs and obstruction to airflow. The symptoms of asthma are variable and usually reversible, either spontaneously or with treatment. Asthma was made a National Health Priority Area in 1999. [Australian Centre for Asthma Monitoring, 2005]. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is also a serious, long-term respiratory condition that mainly affects older people who have been exposed to tobacco smoke. [Australian Centre for Asthma Monitoring, 2006]
