- Research: The main focus of my present research is the toxicity
and potential carcinogenicity of the cyanobacterial toxins cylindrospermopsin
and microcystin in drinking water supplies. Currently the Cooperative Research
Centre for Water Quality and Treatment is funding a collaborative project with
Dr Andrew Humpage of the Australian Water Quality Centre and Dr. Glen Shaw of
the National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology, to explore the mechanism
of cylindrospermopsin toxicity. This includes investigations of genotoxicity,
toxin metabolism and the formation of toxin adducts within cells. A component
of this research is to identify any potential biomarkers of toxicity that can
be used to monitor cylindrospermopsin exposure in human populations.
Another of my research interests is the potential for endocrine disrupting substances
in drinking water to affect human populations. This derives from my earlier research
into endocrine function, particularly reproductive and thyroid endocrinology.
My book on ‘Cyanobacterial Toxins in Drinking Water Supplies:
Cylindrospermopsins and Microcystins’
Has been published in January 2005 by CRC Press, Boca Raton, Fl, USA.
I am Editor of the international scientific journal Environmental Toxicology,
published by Wiley, USA.
