Cyanobacterial Toxicology
This Group is led by Dr Andrew Humpage
& Prof Ian Falconer
Contamination of drinking water by toxins produced by cyanobacterial
(blue-green algae) blooms are an emerging health threat in many parts of the world,
including Australia. Our research is focussed on understanding the biochemical
events involved in the induction of toxicity by algal toxins and on identifying
new algal toxins with pronounced toxic potential. The overall goal is to improve
the quality of the knowledge on which public health decisions concerning algal
toxin exposure are made for human populations.
