Discipline Areas of Research Strengths

Receptor Pharmacology

Receptor-mediated events play an important role in modifying the activity of nerves at all parts of their life cycle. Receptors control neurotransmitter release on a minute-to-minute basis, and on a more long-term basis (as in the formation of memories). They control how growing axons find their targets during development and during remodelling during learning or after injury. They even control the response of nerves to many kinds of injury, including stroke.

The signal transduction pathways by which receptors control neuronal activity are incompletely understood. Research within the Receptor Pharmacology group focuses on the signal transduction pathways by which drugs control neurotransmission, and how drugs may reduce or protect nerve cells from the damage produced by stroke.
