Pain
Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual
or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. It is now
considered to be the 5th vital sign. Everybody experiences pain and the
treatment of pain needs to be individualised because of variability in response.
Effective pain management is particularly problematic in people who have been
maintained chronically on opioids. This group includes people who are receiving
maintenance opioid treatment for dependence problems and those who receive opioids
for chronic pain treatment. Our research focuses on these groups using an
integrated pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenetic approach.
This research is funded by grants from NHMRC, the National Institute on Drug Abuse
and the pharmaceutical industry.
