Nursing Pharmacology
The Discipline of Pharmacology provides a considerable amount of teaching in
both years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor
of Nursing undergraduate program. In year 1, the Discipline teaches the principles
of safe administration of drugs and the key factors that influence and govern
the effects of drugs within the body. During year 2, the major drug classes and
the diseases against which the drugs are used therapeutically are discussed.
Year 2
Semester 1: Pharmacology & Complementary Therapies 2A
Course Aims are:
- To obtain an understanding of the basic concepts of pharmacokinetics and
pharmacogenetics and recognise the factors which can influence the effectiveness
of pharmacotherapy
- To obtain an understanding of the main issues involved in the use of complementary
therapies in relation to pharmacology
- To obtain an understanding of the mechanisms of action and major adverse
effects of drugs used to treat cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders
and duodenal ulcers
- To obtain an understanding of the pharmacological management of pain including
local and general anaesthesia
- To obtain an understanding of the basic concepts of modern toxicology,
including an understanding of how chemical substances enter the body, are
distributed within body tissues, and are eliminated via metabolism or excretion
- To develop a basic appreciation of the process involved in drug discovery
and development
Semester 2: Pharmacology & Complementary Therapies 2A
Course Aims are:
- To obtain an understanding of the important neurotransmitters or chemical
mediators, their receptors and locations in the central nervous system
- To obtain an understanding of the mechanisms of action and major adverse
effects of drugs used to treat major brain disorders
- To identify the common characteristics that are associated with dependence
on a range of different drugs including an understanding of current methods
of treatment of drug dependence
- To obtain an understanding of the mechanisms of action and major adverse
effects of drugs that affect the reproductive system
- To obtain an understanding of the mechanisms of action and major adverse
effects of drugs that affect the endocrine system
- To obtain an understanding of the mechanisms of action and major adverse
effects of the main classes of anticancer, antiviral and antibacterial drugs
- To obtain an understanding of how complementary therapies are regulated
in Australia
