Nursing Pharmacology
The Discipline of Pharmacology provides a considerable amount of teaching in
both years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor
of Nursing undergraduate program. In year 1, the Discipline teaches the principles
of safe administration of drugs and the key factors that influence and govern
the effects of drugs within the body. During year 2, the major drug classes and
the diseases against which the drugs are used therapeutically are discussed.
Year 1
Semester 1: MEDICATION MANAGEMENT 1A:
Course Aims are:
- To obtain an understanding of the principles of safe administration of drugs
- To obtain an understanding of the nomenclature relating to drugs- generic
and trade names, classification systems and families of drugs
- To obtain an understanding of the fundamental skills required for drug dosage
calculations, including numeracy and understanding of the international system
of units
- To develop a basic appreciation of the modes of drug administration and various
forms of drug preparations
- To identify the meaning of common abbreviations and symbols used in prescriptions
and the hazards associated with using abbreviations
- To describe the systems and processes used in the prescribing, dispensing
and administration of medication
Semester 2: MEDICATION MANAGEMENT 1B:
Course Aims are:
- To introduce basic pharmacodynamic concepts, including familiarity with drug
and receptor interactions, receptor superfamilies and dose response relationships
- To obtain an understanding of the organisation of the autonomic nervous system,
mechanisms of transmitter synthesis, storage, release, recycling and degradation
- To obtain an understanding of the important terms used in pharmacokinetics
and describe the events that occur from the time of drug entry into the body to
drug exit from the body
- To obtain an understanding of the approaches used in therapeutic drug monitoring
- To develop an appreciation for the occupational health issues in handling
of medications and the appropriate methods of disposal of medication
