Fourth Year Therapeutics

The Fourth Year Therapeutics tutorials for the Pharmacology rotation are based on five topics to be covered over four sessions during the Medical Home Units attachments. The sessions will occur on Friday afternoons from 3-4.30.

In addition to using text books, we suggest that you look at this PDF document that will help you to find links to other good up-to-date pharmacology sites for each topic.

Fourth Year Drug & Alcohol

The Fourth Year Drug and Alcohol tutorials are held at RAH and specialized units on Tuesdays from 2.00 to 5.00 pm weeks 2 and 4 of Psychological Health, week 3 of Surgical Home Unit and week 6 of Medical Home Unit rotations. Detailed information is in this PDF document.

An essential text book is “Management of Alcohol and Drug Problems”, 2002, Oxford University Press, cost: AUD$49.95; which can be purchased at the Unibooks and Ramsay bookshops;student discount available.

Common Program

The Discipline contributes to several sessions dealing with Pharmacology and Drug & Alcohol problems during the Common Program series of lectures in both years 4 and 5 of the medical course. Details will vary from year to year, but topics include:

  • the influence of pharmacokinetics and changes in pharmacokinetics on prescribing to special groups
  • pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics
  • pharmacological management of ischaemic heart disease
  • pharmacological management of dyslipidaemias
  • biological basis of substance dependence
  • management of drug dependent patients
