Prof. Blumbergs was awarded his MBBS from the University of Adelaide in 1967, and subsequently undertook his residency at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Following a period as a Junior Resident Medical Officer at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, he was a Senior Resident Medical Officer at the Repatriation Hospital (Daw Park). After returning to the RAH in 1971 as a Junior Medical Registrar, he was promoted to Senior Medical Registrar in 1972. He then was appointed as a Registrar in Neuropathology at the Royal Perth Hospital in 1974 and was promoted to Senior Registrar in 1975. He has held positions at the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science since 1977 where he is currently Clinical Professor of Pathology and Head of Neuropathology. Prof. Blumbergs has held the position of Chief of Neuropathology Research, NHMRC Road Accident Research Unit since 1994, and is also presently a Senior Consultant Neuropathologist (Honorary) at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Consultant Neuropathologist (Honorary) at both Finders Medical Centre and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. His research has contributed greatly to the understanding of diffuse axonal injury following neurotrauma and his current research interests are in traumatic brain injury, axonal injury, neurodegenerative diseases and neuromuscular diseases. |
