Dr Ian Parkinson

My substantive position is as a Senior Medical Scientist in the Bone and Joint Research Laboratory in the Division of Tissue Pathology at the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science, where I have been employed since 1980. This laboratory is also incorporated within the Hanson Institute. My major research area is osteoporosis of the spine, where I am investigating the role of cancellous bone architecture and bone mineralisation in determining the strength of vertebral bodies. This research project utilises state of the art micro-CT imaging, backscattered electron microscopy and mechanical testing apparatus.

My role in the Discipline of Pathology is to provide supervision of bone and joint related pathology research for undergraduate research topics, Honours projects and post-graduate projects.
