Lysosomal
Diseases Research Unit
Australasian Referral Laboratory for Lysosomal, Peroxisomal and Associated
Genetic Disorders.
The laboratory developed from a recognition in early 1970 that there was a
requirement for both prenatal and postnatal diagnostic services in Australia
for the (then) recently recognised group of inherited diseases, the lysosomal
storage diseases. These disorders result mainly from enzyme abnormalities
in the metabolism and catabolism of complex neurolipids and mucopolysaccharides.
Later in early 1980, disorders of peroxisomal metabolism were added.
