Dr John Wood BSc (Hons), DPhil
Senior Lecturer, Research Scientist
Dr John Wood completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Bath University, graduating with Honours in 1992. He subsequently completed a DPhil in the Nuffield Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Neville Osborne. His doctoral thesis was titled: “Induction of cell death within the retina and RPE: the role of protein kinase C.” This research produced a number of high-ranking publications and led to a post-doctoral position within the laboratory. He is expert in a wide range of molecular biological techniques, with particular expertise in cell culturing.
Dr Wood is a reviewer for a large number of vision and neuroscience-based journals, including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Ophthalmic Research, Vision Research, Brain Research, Neurochemical Research, Cell Biology International, Experimental Eye Research, Medical Science Monitor, European Biophysics Journal, Journal of Neurochemistry, Journal of Anatomy.
He has been an invited speaker and chairman at neuroprotection-based symposia at the European Vision and Eye Research meetings and the International Society for Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ISOPT) meeting, Seville, Spain. He has made numerous presentations at the Association for Research in Vision meetings in the USA.
He has over 50 publications, many as first author and his publication rate continues to increase, publishing 40 peer-reviewed ophthalmic-based manuscripts in the last 6 years. The majority of publications are in the highest ranking journals for the field.
Dr Wood is currently a senior post doctoral research scientist in the Ophthalmic Division of the Centre for Neurological Research in the Hanson Institute, Adelaide. He was recently appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Dept. of Ophthalmology at Adelaide University, and his status as a world leader in the field of ocular neuroprotection continues to grow.
