Clinical Research

Implant Division

The Implant Division is based at the QEH and is responsible for the running of intraocular lens implant trials across the 3 sites of the CNON.

The division will also incorporate the Anterior segment & Corneal Fellow who is based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital with sessions at the Ophthalmic Research Laboratories and Lyall McEwin Hospital.

Current projects include:

  • Comparison of three types of aspheric IOL in terms of contrast sensitivity, aberrometry and acuity outcome

  • Phacotrabeculectomy using a biaxial phacoemulsification technique

  • Anterior capsule phimosis with foldable and rollable IOL's

  • Astigmatic outcome of one enlarged wound for IOL implantation in biaxial phacoemulsification

  • Astigmatic outcome following implantation of an IOL through a 1.9mm wound in biaxial phacoemulsification

  • Anterior segment OCT examining effective lens position of ThinOptx IOL's following biaxial phacoemulsification

  • Establishment of optimal choice of type of aspheric IOL to match corneal asphericity

  • Examination of the effect of smoking on the outcome of LASIK and PRK

  • Dynamic contour tonometry following hyperopic LASIK and myopic PRK
