A world without vision....

A child's smile, reading a book, even performing everyday tasks so that money may be earned for the family's meals - all these depend on one thing so many of use take for granted: the gift of sight

Sight is a gift, a gift unfortunately denied to many people through diseases such as diabetes and cataract. Without their sight children and adults are robbed of the miracle that our eyes give the rest of us, every day of our lives

The Ophthalmology Network's doctors want to help diagnose, treat and when possible prevent blinding eye diseases, not only in the Central Northern Region of Adelaide but in children and adults living in remote aboriginal communities for whom travel to Adelaide is an impossible dream.

However, while the specialists are willing to donate their time and knowledge to assist in the battle against blinding eye diseases such as cataract, diabetic retinopathy and trachoma, they can't do their work without the 21st century equipment that will accelerate the efficiency of treatment

Nor can they produce the educational resources that will enable people in remote and isolated communities to prevent disease, or treat symptoms before they progress.

By donating to the Vision Fund you will help the helpers- enable the doctors to give the gift of sight, and enable an ever-increasing number of people to to enjoy those every day miracles.

An overwhelming percentage of people with eye disease live in developing countries such as Myanmar - formerly Burma - which of the South East Asian nations has the highest incidence of blindness.

Unfortunately Myanmar and its 50 million people also have the least resources to fight the expensive war against eye disease. For this reason The South Australian Institute of Ophthalmology and the Ophthalmology Network chose to assist the people of Myanmar, hoping that by establishing clinics and teaching adults about the symptoms of diseases such as diabetes, the incidence of blindness would be dramatically reduced.
