Cataract Surgery

The Ophthalmology Network has a heavy general load of patients with cataracts and performs around 2,400 cataract operations annually.

The ophthalmic theatres are well equipped with operating microscope linked to video recording, phacoemulsification, three port pars plana vitrectomy, argon laser, cryotherapy, radioactive plaque application and comprehensive microsurgical instruments and supplies.

Many of the cataracts are expected to be surgically challenging influenced by previous corneal graft and/or glaucoma filtering surgery. These cataracts are dense and often associated with small pupils.

For this reason, supervised training in advanced cataract surgical techniques can be expected from most operating lists.
