Clinical Interests

The environment surrounding the early mammalian embryo has a profound influence on the immediate and long-term developmental potential of the embryo. In particular, how embryos respond to in vitro culture environments continues to be my major research focus.  A variety of techniques are utilized, in particular, microscopic fluorometric quantification is a useful tool to measure metabolic substrate levels and other biochemical markers of cellular stress and activity.

The transfer of research outcomes to clinical and industry application is also an important area of development. Improved knowledge of environment-oocyte/embryo interactions is used to improve oocyte maturation and embryo culture techniques. This in turn leads to more efficient in vitro embryo production for clinical infertility treatment or acceleration of superior genetic traits within industries such as dairy, meat and wool. Research involves a number of collaborations with other laboratories and also companies involved in the supply of artificial reproduction technologies.
