Research Interests

Reproductive Endocrinology and Feto-Maternal Medicine. Author of 3 books, 26 chapters and over 300 publications. Laboratory and clinical trial research has been conducted on many aspects of the hormones relaxin, prostaglandins E2 and F2 a, oestrogen and progestogens. Feto-Maternal research includes preterm labour, cervical ripening, pelvic joint laxity and multiple pregnancy.  Cerebral palsy, causation and its medico legal aspects and the effective delivery of obstetric care are all current Research interests. His ongoing research is on genetic susceptibility factors for cerebral palsy that interact with environmental risk factors for cerebral palsy eg. infection, growth restriction

Research in the menopause and climacteric includes epidemiological studies on the menopause, its conventional and alternative management and many randomised controlled trials of new hormone replacement therapies. Professor MacLennan is a member of the Cochrane Collaboration Review Group on Menstrual Disorders and is conducting and has published systematic reviews on hormone replacement therapies.  He was Chairman of the Women's International Study on Long Duration Oestrogen after Menopause (WISDOM) in Australia .  He is currently conducting long-term trials on tibolone after breast cancer (LIBERATE) and the influence of hormone therapies on cognitive function in ageing women (REMEMBER).

Education

Professor MacLennan has a special interest in video education and has made over 30 educational videos for the lay public, students and specialists.  He is very involved with postgraduate education and has run many national and international congresses. He supervises PhD and Honours Science students as well as medical students.

Clinical Interest

A general public and private gynaecological practice continues with special interest in the menopause.
