Head of Discipline

Judy Magarey graduated as a Registered Nurse at Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) in the 1970s and subsequently completed a Critical Care Certificate in the early 1980s. She was appointed as the ICU clinical educator in 1988 and coordinated the Intensive Care program at RAH for six years.

Judy has completed a Diploma of Nursing, a Bachelor of Nursing, a Master of Nursing research and was the first Australian graduate of a Doctor of Nursing program. Her Doctor of Nursing involved some course work and three research studies presented in a research portfolio. The three studies were:

·      The effectiveness of propofol versus midazolam for the sedation of adult ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICUs). A systematic review.

·      A descriptive study to explore patients’ memories of their stay in an intensive care unit (ICU) and to investigate the association of their memories with the sedation regimens used.

·      A study to investigate the association between the critical illness sedation scale (CISS), independent clinical judgment and the Bispectral index of EEG for the assessment of sedation of ventilated patients in an intensive care unit (ICU).

She was appointed Head of Discipline in 2005. Judy teaches several of the courses in the Master of Nursing Science and supervises Master of Nursing and Doctoral students.  Her research interests involve nurse led interventions in the Intensive Care setting.
